If you’ve been following the Chennai floods on the news then you will have seen that the situation has gotten far worse across the city and state. Despite a few days of respite the rains returned and many people have been forced from their homes and rescue missions have been deployed to make sure the death toll doesn’t continue to rise (260+ people have already lost their lives).
The weather is the worst seen in Chennai for over 100 years. The airport, train station, schools and many municipal buildings are closed.
The children at My name is Kumar are safe, however they can’t go to school which means that they are at the home all day, every day, needing to be fed and looked after – this is a big drain on our resources compared to usual.
However some of their families, and others, who live back in the begging community are not so safe or well off. Many have lots their food reserves and other belongings, which are few but costly for them to replace. The river next to their community, which has been dry for years and was being used as a road, has started to overflow and is flooding the area around it.
So far the funds we have raised through your kind donations has been used to give food, shelter and protection from the water.
My name is Kumar has provided:
160 sleeping mats
30 plastic covers to protect homes from further damage
Ongoing medical care for all the begging community’s residents
Ongoing food for all the begging community’s residents
We are continue to support the 227 people (6x the usual amount of mouths we have to feed) who need our help, but there is more rain currently falling on Chennai and even more predicted – so, we need you.
Today is Friday, and we have to begin again buying supplies for the people on the ground in India today. If you can donate once more, or even share this campaign with your friends or family, it will make a huge difference.
